Brent Crude Above $115: What It Means for Rupee, Naira, Gold
Brent settled at $116.72 on 23 Oct, its highest since April. What it means for the rupee, the naira, UAE fuel prices due 31 Oct, OPEC+ on 1 Nov, and gold.

Brent crude settled at $116.72 a barrel on Friday 23 October, up 6% on the week and its highest close since Wednesday 29 April, Reuters reported. US crude (WTI) closed at $103.27. Houthi attacks on Saudi energy sites drove the jump. For India, it means pressure on the rupee. For Nigeria and the Gulf, the picture is more mixed.
Why are oil prices going up?
Friday's Reuters report (via Yahoo Finance) listed the triggers:
- Houthi rebels attacked energy infrastructure across Saudi Arabia, and Saudi Aramco ordered the evacuation of its Dhahran headquarters.
- The UAE environment ministry reported an oil spill from a tanker off the coast of Umm Al Quwain.
- In Libya, a shut pipeline valve cut output at the Hamada and Tahara fields.
- A Washington-based think tank called October "the worst month for attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz".
The backdrop is the US–Israel war with Iran, which began on Saturday 28 February. Shipping through Hormuz has been disrupted since early March (Wikipedia summary). Reuters says oil is "up almost 80% this year" (RTÉ).

The chart shows WTI spot prices to Tuesday 20 October. Brent, the global benchmark, trades higher. On that day the US Energy Information Administration had Brent at $115.22 and WTI at $107.89 (EIA).
Is the Strait of Hormuz open or closed?
Open, but not normal. Reuters quoted an analyst noting that more oil was moving out of the strait, while warning that this "could change at any minute". That uncertainty is a big part of what traders are paying for.
What does $115 oil mean for the rupee?
India is a major oil importer, so a dearer barrel means more dollars to buy. The RBI's policy minutes list "rising crude oil prices" among the risks to inflation (RBI). Part of its answer is a dollar window, open since Monday 12 October, that lets Indian Oil, HPCL and BPCL get dollars from the RBI instead of the market (Reuters via Khaleej Times). USD/INR was 94.94 on Friday, about 2% from the 96.96 record. The full story is in USD to INR: why the rupee is near its record low.
What does oil mean for the naira?
Nigeria exports oil, so higher prices help in principle. Daba Finance, citing Bloomberg data, counted higher oil earnings among the reasons the naira gained about 8% this year up to Wednesday 2 September (Daba Finance). But oil is not the only driver. The naira lost about 2.4% over Thursday 22 and Friday 23 October, from ₦1,337 to ₦1,370 per dollar at the official close, even as oil rose (CBN). More in dollar to naira today.
What does it mean for the Gulf and UAE fuel prices?
- UAE petrol prices are reset monthly by the UAE Fuel Price Committee. October's Super 98 is Dh4.40 a litre, up from Dh3.80 in September. Special 95 is Dh4.28, E-Plus 91 is Dh4.21 and diesel is Dh4.80 (Gulf News).
- November prices are due at the end of this month, around Saturday 31 October. They are not out yet, and we won't guess them.
- The UAE left OPEC and OPEC+ on Friday 1 May (Khaleej Times). The seven OPEC+ countries that now set monthly output (Saudi Arabia, Russia, Iraq, Kuwait, Kazakhstan, Algeria and Oman) kept November production unchanged and meet again on Sunday 1 November (Nairametrics).
What does oil mean for gold?
You might expect a war to lift gold. This month it hasn't. Dearer oil lifts inflation fears, which keeps a December Fed hike about 80% priced, and gold fell 3.6% last week, a market report said (Rallies.ai). Gold was about $3,997 an ounce at the weekend (gold-api.com).
How do you trade oil-driven moves without getting caught out?
- OPEC+ meets on a Sunday. Any surprise hits prices when markets reopen, and a gap can jump straight over a stop-loss.
- Spreads widen on big headlines. Decide your maximum loss first, then size with the position size calculator.
- Positions held overnight pay or earn a swap, and it is usually a cost. Check it with the swap calculator.
- Watch the US data that moves the dollar on the economic calendar.
